Shift Brewer

You:  An experienced production brewer looking to help grow an exciting established brewery to the next level of success.

Us:  Excelsior Brewing Company opened in 2012 near the shores of Lake Minnetonka.  We were the 205th largest US microbrewery in 2015 and hoping to have cracked the top 200 for 2016.  Our brew system is a 20bbl JVNW brew house and cellar with an in-house capacity north of 8,000 bbls annually.  We also have a 3.5 bbl pilot system for recipe development and special brews.  We finish our beer with a GEA centrifuge and package in a top of the line Moravek bottling line.  Our award winning beer lineup includes Big Island Blond, Spresso Coffee Milk Stout and Bridge Jumper IPA.

The Role:  We are looking to add an experienced shift brewer to our brew team.  The Shift Brewer will work with our Head Brewer to manage all aspects of the brewing operation.  If you’ve read this far and have brewing experience, you most likely have a good idea of what we’re looking for.   We’ll go ahead and list the primary responsibilities to make sure we’re on the same page.

  • Brewing to recipes and specifications
  • Cellar management and operations
  • Quality control processes and documentation
  • Safety (OSHA, chemicals, lifting, machinery and everything else in the brewery)
  • Cleaning, sanitation and chemical handling
  • Documentation for brew logs, QA, recipes and inventory/packaging
  • Packaging oversight and help where needed
  • Facility management & operations
  • Representing EBC and the brew team at events, festivals and industry gatherings

What We’re Looking For: 

  • 1+ years of production brewing experience
  • Brewing education, Cicerone certification, apprenticeship or relevant learning
  • Demonstrated experience in commercial brewing, cleaning and sanitation
  • Yeast handling experience
  • Ability to reach, lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to document quality, brew log and procedure information
  • Ability to lead and work with brew team members
  • Sensory awareness and sensory panel experience
  • Experience operating in a safe, compliant and team structure
  • A clean driving record, forklift experience and willingness to help out where needed
  • Kegs are heavy, you need to be able to safely move and lift (team lift) up to 130 pounds

Brewer Intern

You:  Enrolled in a formal brewing education program, apprenticeship or other experience to demonstrate your interest in the glamorous life of a brewer.

The Role:  We are looking to develop talent and provide intern opportunities to gain experience and exposure to all aspects of a production brewery.  The Brewer Intern role will be directed by our Head Brewer and brew team to rotate through brewing operation.  We expect the duration to range between 30-90 days depending on production levels and availability.  There will be challenging brew days, cleaning fun, packaging, cellaring, finishing beer, warehouse operations and everything else that happens in a brewery.

What We’re Looking For: 

  • Understand the brewing process
  • Understand cellar concepts
  • Be a clean freak and capable of cleaning to strict standards
  • Capable of working with quality control processes and documentation
  • Safety (OSHA, chemicals, lifting, machinery and everything else in the brewery)
  • Cleaning, sanitation and possible chemical handling
  • Documentation for brew logs, QA, recipes and inventory/packaging
  • Packaging operations and assistance
  • Representing EBC and the brew team at events, festivals and industry gatherings
  • Brewing education, Cicerone certification, apprenticeship or relevant learning
  • Ability to reach, lift and/or move up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to document quality, brew log and procedure information
  • Ability to work with brew and packaging team members
  • Sensory awareness and sensory panel experience is a plus
